Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he would have serious concerns if a plan to start next season on August 8 gets the go-ahead.
Having been informed by FIFA that the domestic season must end on May 16, 2010 ahead of the World Cup in South Africa, Premier League and FA officials are trying to come up with a suitable fixture calendar.
One idea is for the season to start a week earlier than planned, meaning the Community Shield would take place at Wembley on Sunday, August 2.
This is just over seven weeks after the last round of World Cup qualifiers this term, with England tackling Andorra on June 10.
Aside from the commercial concerns of England's major clubs, who can make substantial amounts of money in non-tournament summers through tours of the Far East and United States, Ferguson feels it offers insufficient time for players to enjoy a decent break before starting preparations for the 2009-10 campaign.
So the Scot is urging the game's power brokers to devise an alternative strategy.
"I would have concerns," said Ferguson.
"It is not just us, I am talking about the game itself.
"There are internationals on June 10 next year. You can't have it both ways by starting the season at the beginning of August as well.
"It seems very narrow to me in terms of giving players a rest and then preparing them for a new season. It is not a lot of time at all."
